Take a dip in the pool, laze in the spa or fire yourself up in fully equipped gyms before breakfast at your leisure. On a Caribbean cruise holiday there's something for everyone from topping up your tan on the sundecks to activities on and off shore. Browse the on-board shops and boutiques and enjoy duty-free prices. Caribbean cruise ships provide excellent facilities for young and the not so young. Then dance the night away in the nightclub or perhaps enjoy a movie before heading for the midnight buffet.

Any Caribbean cruise that sails out of Miami or Fort Lauderdale will, more than likely, include a stop at the Bahamas at some point on the cruise. This group of around 700 islands (not many more than 20 are inhabited) is a very popular beach resort and can get really busy. Cruise ships that visit are allowed to keep their shops and casinos open as an incentive to offset higher port taxes. Nassau, the main town of Nassau, is very convenient to reach by foot from the ship berths and once you reach the shops you can get some great tax free deals on jewellery and alcohol. Those who would prefer just a Bahamas cruise can look at anumber of 3/4 day itineraries that often run out of Miami port.

Next up are the Greater Antilles which includes Cuba but because of their political situation with the US no American based cruise ship will visit. Similar is Haiti though Royal Caribbean do have their own private island here called Labadee which lies just off the north coast. The Dominican Republic forms the other half of the island mass of Hispaniola with Haiti, and is on most cruise lines list of places to discover though most of it is beach orientated due to a limited tourist infrastructure. Casa de Campo and La Romana are resorts worth visiting. The large tropical rain forested island of Puert Rico is home to its main port of San Juan which has become very commercialized but the old town is close by on foot and is worth a visit to see the 17th century fortress of San Cristobal as is the rain forest of El Yunque. The Caribbean cruise business has held Jamaica as its centre of the Caribbean for over 30 years and the 2 most popular ports of call here are either Ocho Rios or Montego Bay. Ocho Rios has the ever popular, and stunning Dunn's River falls which, at 600 feet, are breathless in both their appearance and if you decide to walk to the top as many visitors do. Montego Bay offers some superb beach resorts which, unfortunately, can be spoilt by vendors pestering you to buy their wares.
Grand Cayman is nearby and is known as the ‘Switzerland of the Caribbean'. It is very well organized and delivers great value for money with great views around the main town of George Town and its beaches (especially Seven Mile Beach). There is also some of the best underwater viewing in the Caribbean here with a trip on the Atlantis Submarine or for those who prefer to do it themselves they can either snorkel or scuba. The most famous feature is the Cayman Wall reefs where, together with Stingray City (an area of water around 10 feet deep)you can swing alongside huge rays for an unforgettable experience. Another popular cruise destination is Cozumel just off the coast of Mexico. There is good shopping here together with some excellent bar restaurants. The Virgin Islands are also well established on the cruise map. Here you have the US Virgin Islands which include St John, St Thomas and St Croix and the British Virgin Islands which include Tortola and Virgin Gorda. These Islands mark the beginning of the Lesser Antilles where such evocative names as Antigua, St Kitts, St Lucia, Martinique, Montserrat and Martinique can be found. St Kitts and its neighbour Nevis is a former British Colony in the Caribbean and here you will find wonderful beaches and great walks. The capital Bassetterre is the main port here and it offers good shopping and friendly inhabitants. A trip to the 37 acre Brimstone Hill 17th century fortress is well worth a visit when here. Another former British colony is Antigua and is great for its beaches and watersports. Cricket enthusiasts may well be aware of the new cricket ground recently built here as the old one in St Johns, where many achievements have been made over the years, has now closed. There is also the 18th century Nelson's Dockyard which is well worth a visit. This was home to the British Caribbean fleet in times of conflict.
Dominica (not Dominican Republic) has places to see such as the waterfall of Morne Trois Pitons and Trafalgar Falls with it's bubbling lake of mud. If it's shopping you prefer, Martinique, known for its French-Caribbean culture, has the pretty town of Forte-de-France. Finally you should not miss a visit to Mount Pelee which is the site of the largest ever volcanic explosion which took place in the Caribbean in 1902 and where over 30,000 people lost their lives. Little Bequia is an occasional port of call for cruise ships with its charming town of Port Elizabeth, and is also the gateway for boat tours to some of the many lovely beach islands that dot the vicinity. Princess Cruises and P&O have their own exclusive beach resort on the private island of Mayreau, which makes for another pleasant diversion.
Grenada,(the Spice Island of the Caribbean) sits to the south of the Grenadines and boasts another of the regions most spectacular beaches, Grande Anse. You can enjoy hunting for souvenirs, which, for once, is mainly hassle free, and maybe try the local rum cocktails spiced with nutmeg! Trinidad, and it's smaller neighbour Tobago, offer a rich , bustling ambience that is a result of its wealth as an oil producer. The main town of Port of Spain boasts a diverse mix of architecture, bustling markets and the wide open spaces of Queens Park Savannah, ringed by the ‘Magnificent Seven' mansions. Tobago is much smaller and sedate and this makes it the perfect place to relax and unwind on the beaches such as Pigeon Point.
The Dutch Antilles complete this tour of the cruise stops of the Caribbean with the islands of Aruba, Bonaire and Curacao which lie just north of the coast of Venezuela. Oranjestad in Aruba has a decent harbour and nice beaches wheras Curacao has a fabulous harbour in Willemstad with a line of houses along the waterfront and a new state-of-the-art cruise terminal. Curacao seaquarium is worth a visit and here you can take a glass-bottomed boat ride! A little piece of paradise can be yours on a Caribbean cruise holiday.
